Our stance on “Buy now, pay later” services
We have chosen not to partner with any “Buy now, pay later” service such as Afterpay or Zip Co because we firmly believe that they enable irresponsible spending by consumers.
If a lender is offering you interest-free money, there must be a catch right? The answer to this comes in two parts.
While there is obviously a place for consumer credit in our modern world, “Buy now, pay later” services tend to prey on impulse buyers who may or may not have the ability to pay the money back. Hence, it is not surprising that up to 25% of those companies’ revenue comes from late fees.
Secondly, the remaining 75% of their revenue comes from merchant fees. What that means is that the shop has to pay a fee around 5% of the value of the purchased item to the service. Because of this, the shop will often ramp up their retail price to offset this loss in profit. And guess what, all customers have to pay the higher price, regardless whether they are paying up front or not.
So, to sum up, we want to be able to offer a fair and transparent price on all of our products. Because of this, the only button you will be able to click on at check out will say Pay Now.
